Sinead Russell claims Women's 100m freestyle gold: Day one – 2011 Canada Cup
Sinead Russell of DS claimed the title of Women's 100m freestyle on first day of the 2011 Canada Cup on Friday, November 25 in Toronto, Ontario.
The session included 100m freestyle, 200m back-stroke and 100m breast-stroke in Women's and Men's category.
The 18-year-old Russell posted a wonderful time of 55.73 seconds to earn the title of freestyle event. She remained 0.10 seconds ahead of Britta MacLean of ESWIM, who earned the silver medal with a timing of 55.83 seconds. MacLean was followed by her team-mate,
Lauren Earp, who acquired bronze medal of the event with a timing of 56.28 seconds.
Next was the equivalent event in Men's category, where Richard Hortness of LAC won gold medal of the event by posting a time of 50.57 seconds. The 26-year-old Hortness was followed by H Abdel-Khalik and Tom Miller of TSC, who secured second and third position
with timings of 51.07 and 51.10 seconds, respectively.
In the meantime, the crowd witnessed another meticulous effort of Russell in the Women's 200m back-stroke. The 18-year-old Russell exceeded expectations of her fans by lowering the championship mark with a wonderful timing of 2 minutes and 10.97 seconds.
Her gold winning effort remained considerably ahead of MacLean, who seized silver medal of the event in a time of 2 minute and 12.87 seconds. The third spot was secured by Genevie Cantin of Rouge ET OR, who hit the wall with a timing of 2 minutes and 13.10
seconds.
Moments later, Tobias Oriwol of TSC earned gold finish in the Men's 200m back-stroke event. Oriwol reported a time of 1 minute and 58.88 seconds for the crown. He was trailed by Matthew Swanston of NEW and Charlie Boldison of GBR, who ended their swims in
a time of 2:00.51 and 2:03.67 minutes for second and third position, respectively.
Subsequently, Ma Chekanovych of SF claimed the title of Women's 100m breast-stroke as she posted a time of 1 minute and 09.72 seconds. Kierra Smith of LLSC and Erin Stamp of GMAC followed her on the podium for silver and bronze medal with timings of 1:09.76
and 1:10.29 minutes, respectively.
Furthermore, the session ended after the completion of all scheduled events.
