Sinead Russell pockets Women’s 200m backstroke title - Canadian Olympic & Paralympic Trials
Sinead Russell of BWSC pocketed gold medal of the Women’s 200m backstroke on closing day of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials in Montreal on Sunday, April 1.
Russell, who entered the final round as fastest swimmer, spoiled party of her opponents by sustaining her position in the playoff. With her splendid swim, she faced no trouble in acquiring gold medal of the discipline.
Russell dominated her way to the finishing wall throughout the 200m discipline and tapped the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 08.04 seconds for gold medal. Her immaculate effort was trailed by Hilary Caldwell of PSW, who stayed 1.10 seconds away and
surfaced on the finishing wall for silver medal by producing a time of 2 minutes and 09.14 seconds.
Similarly, Caldwell remained 0.39 seconds ahead of her following swimmer, Julia Wilkinson of IS, who seized third fastest spot on the victory stand by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 09.53 seconds.
The bronze medallist was chased by Dominique Bouchard of NBYT, who stayed 0.17 seconds slower from her former finisher and concluded her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 09.70 seconds.
Bouchard was followed by Barbara Jardin of PPO, who stayed just 1.08 seconds behind her foregoing competitor and emerged on the finishing wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 10.78 seconds for fifth position.
Genevieve Cantin of UL snatched sixth best finishing spot of the discipline as she remained almost half a second behind and posted a time of 2 minutes and 11.12 seconds.
She was trailed by Tess Simpson of CSL, who stayed nearly three seconds slower from Cantin and occupied seventh position of the discipline with the timing of 2 minutes and 14.31 seconds.
The eighth position of the discipline was obtained by Annie Harrison of Oak, who stayed 1.42 seconds behind and hit the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 15.73 seconds.
Furthermore, Russell’s gold accomplishment in the distant backstroke discipline has qualified her in the national team to the 2012 London Olympic Games. In addition, she expressed that she will try to make her country proud at the mega stage of sports.
