Sing and play guitar at the same time?

Me and some friends are starting up a band, thing is we need two guitarists, now we have a good guitarist, and i can play guitar alrite, but im also the leed vocals and i find it extreamly difficult to sing and play at the same time?

I ran into this same situation a couple years ago. The thing is if you know the guitar part extremely well it will eventually come. But your voice will initially not be as powerful or have as good as tone as you singing without the guitar. It will get pretty easy to play basic chords and sing if you just keep at it, but playing riffs or complicated music will severely diminish your vocal quality unless you are a freak of nature. In my opinion, I never really appreciated Jimi Hendrix's or Stevie Ray Vaughn's singing ability, but they could sing while playing some really complex stuff.

Final thoughts- if you are a really good vocalist, drop the guitar and be a front man. If you're more folk singing or rock/shouting, just keep at it and it will "magically come." Personally I decided to play guitar when my cousing sings, and sing without the guitar on my featured songs, but thats just me and I enjoy singing more.

dude,when i played at first,i was like,i guess God just never made me where i could sing and play at the sametime.but when i kept practicing i got it.as they,say practice makes perfect!

my band got 3 guitarist 2 vocals no bass and 1 drum,so yes you will do just fine

Practice, practice, practice.

What works for me is to practice the guitar part thoroughly to the point where I can play it without having to think about it very much; then I can just let my hands do their thing on the guitar and focus most of my attention on my singing.

Check on youtube for videos of George Benson. He seems to manage OK.

just practice and worse comes to worse, I mean you don't really need 2 guitarists, Rage against the machine, Primus, Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Led Zeppelin, and Cream all only used one guitarist but I guess it depends on the music you're doing.
