Singapore International Series: A pre quarter-final round entry for Wee Gleen Tan, Mei Kuan Chow
Malaysia’s experienced Mixed Doubles team Wee Gleen Tan-Mei Kuan Chow proved their class in Li-Ning Singapore International Series and trod into pre quarter-finals after stamping Wannawat Ampunsuwan-Puttita Supajirakul on August 15, 2012.
This epic battle lasted for one hour and both teams played their heart out to read final figures of 21-18, 20-22 and 21-18.
Though, the victorious pair put a fluctuated performance but still they managed to survive this nerve-racking encounter.
Meanwhile, the Thai shuttlers’ magic could prevail only in second set of the match and they had to bid farewell to this international series.
The battle heated up immediately in first set as both contenders put blistering performances to burn down the opponent.
In first half of the set, Wannawat and Puttita stepped forward by gathering a couple of valuable points in the beginning but they could not go with the same flow in the next couple of rallies and allowed their challengers to proceed.
Wee Gleen and Mei Kuan enjoyed an upper hand all the way to half time and managed to place a respectable total of 11 before the interval.
After mid-game break, they lost grip for short span of time but then reinstated their authority with few uninterrupted rallies. They swept the table with a winning margin of 21-18.
The following game was best part of the tussle as both teams put all in their possession to achieve their respective goals.
Wee Gleen and Mei Kuan were looking to transform their initial lead into a straight-set win whereas the Thai campaigners were striving hard to avoid a shameful exit.
They remained close on points table and made this segment of the showdown memorable by putting breath-taking performance.
The second set remained on knife’s edge until game point situation but the twosome of Wannawat-Puttita made strong bid and stole the limelight with 22-20 score.
Third set was filled with great sensation as they were hanging by thread to stay alive. They snapped each other’s heels throughout this segment but finally Wee Gleen-Mei Kuan swept the table with favourable result of 21-18.
Now they will lock horns with third seeded Liu Yi-Ting Ting Thng of Singapore in second round of the tournament.
