Singapore International Series: Yu Po Pai stuns Jiayuan Chen in Women’s Singles pre-quarter-final
Yu Po Pai, an in-form shuttler from Chinese Taipei, surprised everyone by delivering a gutsy performance in Women’s Singles pre-quarter-final battle when she stunned her higher ranked local opponent Jiayuan Chen at the Singapore International Series 2012
in Singapore, on Thursday, August 16.
It was one of the best contests of the day as both ladies put up their best performance but it was the un-seeded Yu Po who stole the limelight by beating Jiayuan who was the third seed in Women’s Singles main draw.
The lower ranked Yu Po put up staggering show of flawless badminton while remaining quick and aggressive on court and managed to end up the winning run of Jiayuan in three games with a decent margin on the board.
On the other hand, Jiayuan could not produce her best form despite having the support of her home fans. She could not create pressure on her rival and eventually lost to Yu Po in rubber games without proving her worth.
The opening set was one-sided when Yu Po played with aggression and precision by taking the bird early from all areas and kept her higher ranked opponent under pressure from opening rallies.
The impressive Yu Po sailed smoothly in opening half and took a wonderful lead until the break.
After the interval, the Taipei shuttler did not let her Singaporean rival to find a good flow and eventually took the opening set with a huge 21-13 score on the board.
In the second game, Jiayuan changed her tactics and also played fast badminton. She did not let her lower ranked opponent to build lead until the one-minute break.
After the mid-game interval, both shuttlers progressed equally and reached at 21-21 when Yu Po executed a few wrong shots and eventually lost the set with a 21-23 score on the board.
In the deciding game, the opening half was interesting when both shuttlers snapped each other’s heel by playing at the best speed.
However, it was Yu Po who took over the control after the break and remained successful in securing the final set with a 21-16 margin on the board.
The in-form Yu Po won this epic battle against Jiayuan in three games with a reasonable margin of 21-13, 21-23 and 21-16.
