Singapore Open 2012: Hung Ling, Wen Hsing pave their path to Mixed Doubles quarter-finals
Prime Mixed Doubles team Chen Hung Ling-Cheng Wen Hsing of Chinese Taipei secured their berth in quarter-finals of Li Ning Singapore Open by stamping Kenichi Hayakawa-Misaki Matsutomo on June 21, 2012.
This second round match was staged in Singapore Indoor Stadium and both contenders entertained the spectators for 49 minutes before wrapping the show with 13-21, 24-22 and 13-21.
Hung Ling and Wen Hsing will now test their chemistry against Indian duo Diju V-Jwala Gutta to cement their spot in semi-final round of Super Series event.
In their pre quarter-final contest, World Number five Taipei couple served notice of their supremacy in opening and closing parts of the game while the Japanese team narrowly snatched the second set.
The first set started with Kenichi Hayakawa-Misaki Matsutomo getting down in the beginning. They struggled to forge a fruitful partnership and remained at the lower end until mid-game break.
The twosome of Hung Ling and Wen Hsing registered a decent total of 11-8 at half time and entered in second half with great confidence.
They employed unusual tactics in later part of the game and cornered their challengers by piling up a formidable figure of 17-12. This respectable lead helped them to bag first match point with a staggering margin of 21-13.
Following game proved best part of the tussle as at one stage the Taipei campaigners were in strong position to seal a straight-set win but then Japanese turned their plans into dust.
In first half, Kenichi Hayakawa and Misaki Matsutomo got command over game by reaching at nine points swiftly but they made some fatal mistakes which triggered the collapse.
Their bad patch continued in third quarter of the set also as they could not make a notable difference in score position.
However, they grabbed last three points in a row and finished second set with a tight yet decisive total of 24-22.
The next segment of the show turned consequential as both teams were standing at same level and were desperately looking for a win to stay in the contest.
They remained toe-to-toe until mid-game break but then Hung Ling-Wen Hsing snatched ten out of last 13 points and seized the victory with a distinctive margin of 21-13.
