Singapore Open 2012: Jiayuan Chen enters Women’s Singles pre quarter-finals
Women’s Singles campaigner Jiayuan Chen of Singapore clinched a spot in pre quarter-finals of Li Ning Singapore Open after beating Jie Yao in opening match on Wednesday, June 20, 2012.
This first round battle prolonged to 55 minutes and both contenders displayed commendable craft in court before ending this tussle with 24-22, 16-21 and 21-15.
Now the Singaporean girl will test her skills against World Number 11 Taipei shuttler Cheng Shao Chieh to ensure her presence in top eight players of the tournament.
Earlier, Jiayuan Chen opened marathon against Dutch campaigner and blew her away in first and last segments of the show while her rival’s magic could prevail only in second set.
Both players made first set of the match a memorable encounter with a spectacular show of badminton skills.
They remained close to each other until game point situation and made the crowd gasp with their mesmerising performance.
In opening half of game, Jiayuan Chen remained in leading position with four-point difference in start but she lost that grip and allowed her challenger to narrow the gap at 11-10.
After mid-game break, she could not gain a notable advantage and stayed equal all the way to final stage. She grabbed last three points in a row and finished this race with 24-22 score on the board.
However, the story was entirely different in next game as Jie Yao stormed back with a strong reply and outclassed her opponent.
This time she did not spare any loophole and launched an effective counter-attack strategy. She established a formidable lead by clinching six points straight away in start and raised this total to 11-3 until one-minute interval.
Later part of second set also belonged to her as the opposing shuttler never came out of this huge deficit and surrendered after reading a 16-21 margin.
Third and final set was played at same speed but this time the Singaporean campaigner controlled the pace in most rallies.
Though, Jiayuan Chen struggled a bit in the beginning but still she got into commanding position in later part of the game to wrap the show with favourable figure of 21-15.
