Singapore Open 2012: Joachim Persson waylays Robin Gonansa in Men’s Singles qualifying round
Men’s Singles campaigner Joachim Persson of Denmark cleared first hurdle of Li Ning Singapore Open by beating Robin Gonansa in first stage of qualifying round on June 19, 2012.
This epic 54-minute tussle proved real test of their physical and mental strength as it prolonged to three exhausting sets before ending with 11-21, 21-15 and 20-22.
The Danish shuttler displayed commendable skills in court and locked the honour by winning first and last sets of the match while his opponent could prevail only in second segment of the show.
Now he will be up against the Indian player Anand Pawar in second stage of qualifying round and win will take him into main draw of the event.
Earlier in his opening encounter, Joachim Persson registered his presence in very first set of the match by overpowering his challenger with great conviction.
The first half of the set started with his four quick points but the opposing shuttler did not allow him to go far and caught him at 4-4.
He gathered couple of vital points again and reached seven but Robin Gonansa accelerated his pace and established a decent lead with 9-7.
Joachim switched on the best in him and finished first half with 11-9 total by dominating four consecutive rallies.
Later part of the game completely belonged to him as he first strengthened his grip with 14-9 and then raised this to final score of 21-11.
However, Robin showed elevated craft in following game and managed to stay in the contest. The Singaporean campaigner remained under influence of his competitor in the beginning but then couple of uninterrupted rallies gave boost to his confidence.
He was at lower end until 7-10 but then he clinched four points in a row and placed a respectable margin of 11-10 before interval.
After mid-game break, Robin continued with same momentum and hardly faced any resistance in registering concluding figure of 21-15.
This revised match score position made third set decisive and both contenders put an extra effort to avoid a woeful exit.
However, Joachim Persson proved himself superior by snatching last two points in tight margin of 22-20.
