Singapore Open 2013: Sun Yu upsets Juliane Schenk in round-of-16 contest – Badminton news
Women’s Singles player of China, Sun Yu, continued her staggering run and reached into quarter-final after winning round-of-16 fight against the higher ranked Juliane Schenk of Germany at Li Ning Singapore Open 2013 in Singapore, on Thursday, June 20.
The un-seeded Sun, who started her campaign in this Super Series event from the qualifying round, continued surprising the badminton world with her impressive play. She displayed her incredible craft and outplayed the World Number Two and third seed of the
event, Schenk, in a spectacular fashion in 48 minutes.
The Chinese lady played beautifully from the starting point of the match and maintained her rhythm all the way. She finished the job in an inspiring fashion in straight sets with a 21-19 and 21-15 score line.
On the other hand, the third seeded Schenk struggled really hard to find a good flow. She could not play her normal game at any stage. She tried all of her tactics but failed to manage stop the progress of her rival and lost the match in straight games.
From the initial points in first game, both contestants played fast and positive badminton and kept the pace of rallies very high. It was a close contest in the starting half and Sun was slightly ahead until the break.
After the interval, the impressive Sun started to control the affairs and she showed a steady progress. She did not let her rival to dominate the pace and wrapped up the contest with a close score of 21-19.
In the second game, Yu progressed with a great pace and she easily grabbed a wonderful lead on the board until the one-minute interval.
Schenk tried to take benefit from her powerful smashes but failed to get perfect angles and remained struggling all the way.
After the break, Sun controlled her nerves and maintained a good difference on the board. She played safe strokes during the prolonged rallies and eventually won the set with a good margin of 21-15.
In the quarter-final contest, the in-form Sun will be up against Chinese Taipei’s Tzu Ying Tai, who got rid of Japan’s Minatsu Mitani in the other pre-quarter-final clash.
