Singapore Open 2013: Tommy Sugiarto ousts Nguyen Tien Minh in semi-final encounter – Badminton news
Indonesia’s lofty player, Tommy Sugiarto, secured a title berth as he overpowered his higher ranked opponent Nguyen Tien Minh Vietnam in Men’s Singles semi-final fight at Li Ning Singapore Open 2013 on Saturday, June 22, in Singapore.
The un-seeded Sugiarto, who has shown a considerable improvement in all departments of his game, played with incredible speed and remained successful in defeating the sixth seeded Tien Minh in a thrilling 74-minute contest.
Indonesian shuttler proved his superior fitness throughout this exhausting contest. However, he played with controlled badminton at crucial stages and won the match in rubber games with a reasonable 20-22, 21-19 and 21-15 score on the board.
Meanwhile, the higher ranked Tien Minh played well and took the first game but failed to maintain his upper hand in the following games. He lost this exciting contest in hard-fought rubber games.
The first game was interesting when both men employed powerful shots and also took the bird early at net. They progressed with the same pace on the board and until the one-minute break; no one could manage a reasonable lead.
After the interval, the higher ranked Tien Minh geared up his speed but could not create any gap. The score reached at 20-20 when Sugiarto failed to control the pace and lost the set with a 20-22 score on the board.
In the second set, both players again entertained the huge crowd with their extraordinary skills. Until the one-minute interval, both shuttlers again were neck to neck on the board.
After the interval, the match progressed in the similar fashion and both contestants reached at the concluding points. However, Sugiarto controlled the pace and won the set with a tight score of 21-19.
In the ending set, Indonesian shuttler dominated the pace for most part in the starting half and took a reasonable lead until the break.
After the interval, Tien Minh tried to put things back on track but failed to push Sugiarto on back foot. He also committed a few mistakes on critical stages that enabled his rival to stay ahead.
Sugiarto impressed the crowd by playing spectacular game in the ending points and won the set with a reasonable 21-15 total on the score board.
