Singapore Open: Cheng Shao Chieh ousts Jiayuan Chen in Women’s Singles round-of-16
Chinese Taipei’s Cheng Shao Chieh showed her tremendous skills in the court and reached into Women’s Singles quarter-final after beating Singapore’s spirited player Jiayuan Chen at the round-of-16 contest in Li Ning Singapore Open Super Series 2012 on Thursday,
June 21, in Singapore.
The World Number 13 Shao Chieh, who is fourth seed in Women’s Singles draw of the tournament, struggled hard against her lower ranked local opponent and managed to win the battle in hard-fought rubber games.
The higher ranked Shao Chieh found a worst start as she easily lost the opening game to her gritty Singaporean rival. However, she fought back in the second game and maintained her elevated run to earn victory with a decent score.
Jiayuan, on the other hand, found a huge support of her home crowd and played tremendous badminton in the opening game. However, she could not maintain her speed and eventually lost the following both games with a comfortable difference and lost the fight
in three games.
In the first game, Jiayuan was on a completely different level by commanding the rallies from all corners of the court. She was impressive in her strategy and was ahead at 11-4 until the break.
After the interval, the Taipei shuttler accelerated her speed but failed to narrow the huge lead of her rival and eventually lost the game in a lopsided manner with a 13-21 score on the board.
In the following set, Shao Chieh played composed badminton as she did not repeat her previous mistakes this time and took a reasonable lead of 11-7 until the mid-game interval.
After the break, the Taipei lady remained aggressive and continued her positive run which helped her to take the second game with a 21-17 score on the board.
In the decider, the higher ranked Shao Chieh was in complete control as she played with great confidence and pushed Jiayuan in all corners quite easily.
The Taipei lady was in full swing in the deciding set and took it easily with a tremendous score of 21-11.
Shao Chieh won this pre-quarter-final battle against Jiayuan in three games with a superb 13-21, 21-17 and 21-11 margin on the score board.
