Singapore Open: Porntip Buranaprasertsuk sends Juan Gu packing in Women’s Singles first round
Thailand’s Porntip Buranaprasertsuk found a good start at the Women’s Singles first round of Singapore Open Super Series 2012 when she defeated the local shuttler Juan Gu on Wednesday, June 20, in Singapore.
The World Number 17 Porntip, who has been showing her class in the last few months, played positive and aggressive badminton and eventually overpowered the eighth seeded Juan, who was placed at number 16 in Women’s Singles world placements.
The lower ranked Thai lady was at her best when she played fast and positive badminton throughout the competition and ousted her rival in straight games with a tight margin on the board.
Juan, in the meanwhile, failed to make her home crowd happy as she could not play at her best and remained struggling against her in-form Thai opponent and lost to her with a narrow difference.
In the first game, both ladies unleashed their impressive skills and remained close in opening points. They progressed equally by putting up superb show of top quality badminton and reached at 7-7.
At this stage, Porntip played with precision and took a convincing lead of 11-8 until the end of first half.
After the interval, Porntip maintained her upper hand and stretched her lead. However, she committed a few mistakes which helped her rival bridge the gap at 18-18.
Porntip showed her craft at this crucial stage and score three points in a row to bag the set with a 21-18 score on the board.
In the following set, Juan dominated the pace of rallies from opening points but could not manage a comfortable lead as her Thai rival was not far behind.
Until the mid-game interval, Porntip remained successful in taking lead with a narrow score of 11-10.
After the break, both shuttlers kept the crowd engaged with their incredible play and the score reached at 20-20.
Porntip put up superb show by playing attacking and controlled badminton and finished off the game with a 22-20 score on the board.
The in-form Porntip emerged as the winner in this Women’s Singles first round battle with a difference of 21-18 and 22-20.
