Singaporeans unfazed with conditions in Delhi
Singaporean athletes are determined to win medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games despite facing security and health concerns in New Delhi.
Twin gymnasts Tabitha and Nicole Tay said they are counting on local organisers to make sure that their stay in the Indian capital will be safe.
"We saw the news but we believe we've prepared well and there shouldn't be too many problems. But we've brought along food and medication, just in case," Tabitha said before boarding a plane along with
the other members of the Singapore team to New Delhi on Wednesday.
Swimming team head coach Ang Peng Siong said his wards are unfazed with a series of unfortunate events that marred New Delhi's hosting of the quadrennial meet.
"We have a young group who will use this meet to build for future games, and they are very focused on what they want to achieve. I don't see any big distractions," he said.
Badminton player Shinta Mulia Sari said she can now focus on her event after being assured by friends that everything is okay in the Indian capital.
"They told me that everything is okay, now I'm focused on achieving my target of getting my hands on a medal," said the 22-year-old, who will see action with Yao Lei in the women's doubles event.
Deputy prime minister Teo Chee Hean also urged the athletes to perform well. "Compete in the Games in good spirit. Be good as I'm sure our Indian friends will be good hosts. Stay focused and bring back
glory for yourself and Singapore," said Teo, who is also the president of the Singapore National Olympic Council.
The first batch of the Singaporean delegation left for New Delhi on Wednesday. Singaporean athletes will vie for medals in archery, athletics, badminton, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting
and Paralympic sports.
