I have this machine- it has rubber feed dogs.  My machine is over 30 yrs old and still works well.  If the thread tangles under the cloth, it usually means the top thread isn't threaded correctly  through the tension disks on the top.  A threading diagram is here: http://www.sewusa.com/Threading_Diagrams/Threading_Pages/Singer_Sewing_Machine_Threading/singer_900_futura_threading.htm
