Question:

Singing in the rain? What do you think of this poem?

I have never understood

Why people like to dance

Or to sing

In the rain.

The rain on my island

Floods the streets,

Turns the sand to mud,

Deadens my heart.

I think of Paradise lost,

And of a lover

And a friend

And I long for the sun.

I want to feel the sand,

Dry and soft and white,

I want to remember him

Smiling in the sun.

  1. A melancholy heartbreak of a poem! Great! Rain only adds to your misery, with flooding, mud, and rain IS Paradise Lost to you.

Oh, but your last two lines sent shivers of your pain thru me.

The poignancy of your loss of him reverberates in them, but, for a tiny while I was happy for your memory of him this way.

    Ultimately fantastic!

  2. So wistful and heart-wrenching, longing for the sun and for the lover smiling in its light.  It brought back memories for me of when I lived on the beach.  It's a wonderful poem.

  3. You know what, Elaine, I don't live on an island, but it is also raining and windy in Paris today. I am also thinking of a friend and of the sun and the sand, "dry and soft and white".

You poem is full of sensuous images, and it is moving, but not too sentimental, which I really like.

EDIT: I added a sentence in French, and could not post my answer! Ca n'est pas juste! (trying again...).

  4. Sometimes, it's a challenge to remember with a smile.  Very good poem indeed.

  5. I love this poem because it is very well written, it is very rich in vivid, powerful imageries...and on top of all, i love the allusion you made to Milton's Paradise Lost! Kudos!!! =)

  6. Not bad, for a girl...hehehe

Edit: See, all the girls love this one!

  7. I think this is a very meaningful poem. You are right and those are some very good questions i wish i knew myself.
