Singing to your kids.....?

Do parents still sing to their kids at night (or any other time of day) I was wondering because Since the day my kids were born I have read stories and sang to them before they fall asleep. A friend of mine found out that I do this and she was amazed that I do it and she commented (in a joking manner) that she was a bad mom because she didn't/doesn't do that to her only child. I laughed it off and said "Oh no, your a great mom!" But, it got me to thinking....Am I one of the few that still do read and sing to my kids...even though they are now 5 and 3 years old? It such a great memory for us...its our time to unwind and connect with one another...I work full time again so I don't spend as much time with them now as I had for the last 3 years (I stopped working for the last 3 years to be with them) So that time we share at bedtime is very meaningfull to me (even more so now that I'm not with them during the day.) How many parents still do this? Do you just read?Just sing? or both?

  1. I'm only 15, but I read and sing to some of the kids I babysit for, if their parents normally do... You're right there are a lot less, but still some. Also, my godson's mom still sings to ALL of her kids and they are ages: 9, 7, 2, 3 months. :) I definately plan on reading and singing to my kids all the time! I want those things to be joyous parts of their lives, as they have always been for me!

  2. lots of moms still do that.   responsible moms that is.  u really have to connect  with ur children and spend time with them so that they will respect u.  if u just ignore them when they r little, they wil probably end up not respecting u, and they will have a greater tendency to lie to u, or disobey u.  u r definately not the only one.

  3. I have always loved musicals, and all the toddlers i babysit, i sing the showtunes to/with. I just love to sing, and parents love it when the kids tell them about how their babysitter always sings. It makes you sound like mary poppins. lol j/k I also read them books whenever I put them to bed.

From what i can tell of the parents (who are the kind that plug their kids into video games and give them candy and cookies whenever they ask for them :( which is terrible)

I don't think any seem like the type to sing to their kids.

  4. I have sang to my kids since they were in my stomach. I vary sometimes, I sing and read, some nights we do neither and just play a music CD. But yes I love to sing to them and them to sing with me. My mother always did and it is a great memory for me and I want it for them as well.

  5. If you have a good singing voice, then singing to them is a great idea. It calms them when they are little. I will sing to my children for sure :)

  6. I just read. I have an awful singing voice, and even though I know my daughter won't care, i don't want anyone else in the house to hear me lol. Both grandma's sing to her though. I think it's great that you do both! I probably sang to her once or twice when she was first born, but i don't think i've done it since unless it's just a silly fun song.

  7. my son is only 9 and a half weeks old but i read to him occasionally ... but almost every afternoon when he's being really grizzly i'll crank up some music and sing along to it and dance around the house with him, he loves it and calms him down lots. i usually stop once my bf gets home though since i'm not a great singer (hence the music gets turned up) but we also have a special song that i sing to him when he's really upset ... especially if we're in the car or something.

  8. I read and sing to my 19 month old son several times a day, not just at bed time.  When he gets over stimulated from playing around too much and needs a quiet break, that is what we do together.  My son has learned many many words from my reading to him. He absolutely loves music.  We sing and dance all the time.  He absolutely is in love with Carrie Underwood.  I also sing children's songs to him and tell him nursery rhymes.  I think reading and singing is very important in child development.  It enhances memory, pitch, vocabulary, etc.

    Hope my answer helped!

  9. My daughter is 2 and a half and we read and sing every night.  I've always sang to her since the day she was born.  and as she got older we started reading books before bedtime as well as singing ....I'm having my second child in September and I will do the same for him.  I think singing is very relaxing for the child and reading is great for learning new words and memorization skills.

  10. My Daughter is 2 months old I read to her all of the time! I'm hoping that she will develop a love for reading, since I've always loved it!!!! I also sing to her as well. I read to her every time she's awake. Before bed, I hold her and kind of "dance" with her and we listen to music and I sing to her and then we settle down and I read about 2 or so books and she's asleep for the night. :) Ahh, I love it!
