  1. Single parents can adopt in all forms (international, newborn, foster care). I went through foster care and adopted a lovely little boy. Most of the time a birth mom will NOT choose a single mom or dad for their newborn, after all if they don't want to raise that child alone, why should they choose a single parent? Many international adoption laws have changed and now require married couples for newborns and only older or disabled children may be adopted by single person. Which I find contradictory since you are now leaving only the more difficult children to the people who will do it alone. Not in all cases, but very often is the case. If you are single, your best bet is foster care in this country. You can choose not to adopt sexual abuse or emotionally challenged or whatever you do not feel comfortable with. It is free to do this (the state pays adoption costs) although you will have to pay out of pocket for background checks and possibly a homestudy (you SHOULDN"T have to pay for this is you go through the state or non profit agency- I went through florida Baptist children's homes you must be Christian to do this, but other organizations will have different criteria. I would adopt again, but right now my son is 3 and still stuck in the terrible 2s. Also, I would like to buy a house since I can't afford to rent a bigger place right now.

  2. I am a single parent who has adopted three children from China.  My first daughter was adopted as an infant, and my other two girls had special needs, and were adopted at older ages.  My experience has been wonderful, and I would do it again in a heartbeat!   It is not as difficult as people think to be a single parent.  You just have to be organized, and willing to give up certain things that you took for granted before you had kids.

The only negative thing about it is that you do not have a spouse to share in your joy when your kids do things that make you proud.  I always cry a little at every concert, every game, every award ceremony, because I'd love to be able to lean over and say to their Dad (if they had one), "Isn't she the BEST?"

China unfortunately no longer permits single parent adoptions, but Vietnam is an excellent alternative.  Certain agencies also have programs for singles in Russia, Kazakhstan, and Guatemala.

  3. I am a single parent of a little boy from Guatemala.  He was a baby when I picked him up.  My adoption exprience was normal and typical... but the process is changing in Guatemala.  Best wishes!

  4. I was once, a single parent but it was from a biological son that i had before his father and i married.

I never knew singles could adopt i always thought only married couples could adopt, but i would say hats off to the  parents that adopt and say to them to keep up the good work I'm sure the kids that are being adopted will love them for it and would never forget the experience.

  5. I'm a single mother of two adopted children.  I adopted from foster parenting when the parents decided to terminate their rights.......first the boy then they decided they didn't want their little girl either.  It was heart breaking.

It was an okay experience.  I love my children very much and am glad that I was able to be the one there for them.  But it is heart breaking.  The kids hurt so bad and wonder what was "wrong" with them for their bparents to not want them.  Very hard to see them go through..........taking them to visits and the bparents not show up......take the child to DHHS to be told that their parents have signed clear of them........
