Question:

Single Woman moving to Perth - which suburb is safe to live in alone? How safe is it to commute in Perth?

Hello. I am a single woman with a pending job in the Armadale area. I have no relatives or friends in Perth, so at the moment I am at a loss as to how to start looking for potential accommodation. While I am willing to commute, I am concerned about whether or not it will be safe to do so when I get off shift or on shift late at night or very early in the morning. I will not have my own car.

Would any of you have any suggestions on:

1. What area it would be safe to live in the Armadale-Kelmscott-Mt. Nasura locale for a single woman living alone?

2. If you were to suggest a suburb a bit farther from the area that will require a commute, which areas should I look at? In which of those areas will it be fairly safe to get a flat by myself?

Any advice you can give me on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

  1. To be honest Armadale is a bit rough - some parts worse than others- and while I don't think it would be dangerous to live there or walk by yourself during the day (my 13yo daughter has a lot of friends that live in that area and they don't have any problems walking around visiting one another) I certainly wouldn't fancy hanging round the train station by myself at night. Mt Nasura would be a bit nicer but I'm not sure what public transport there would be there. Kelmscott is almost as bad as Armadale, Westfield is pretty bad too.

If it is possible I would be making arrangements to get a car as soon as you can.

Anyway here is the public transport web page.

And here are a couple of real estate sites.

  2. umm no babe. plz dont live alone down there. i wouldnt live past thornlie personally i have before n it aint great. where would u be working.. like close to the train or what? not trying to scare u im just trying to think of good advice! it also depends what ull be earning, you could live further out and still travel to armadale its not a big place it wouldnt take long.

  3. If I worked in Armadale and wanted to be reasonably close by but safe, then I'd look at Roleystone, or anywhere in the Hills. Do not go anywhere on the plains. Personally I'd go no closer than Cannington to the North, or Serpentine in the South, but I do have friends who live in Seville Grove, but I wouldn't.

  4. If you are working in Armadale it would be wise to live there close to your job, you say you are doing shift work

it is going to be hard for you if you do not own a car as you wont find transport early and late at night unless you use a taxi which is not cheap

and no matter what area you live in it is not safe to walk around at night. i would suggest you try and get accomodation as close as you can to your job

  5. Perth has a fairly low crime rate. Unprovoked street crime is basically non-existent if watching the news  is anything to go by. Some part of Armadale\Kelmscott does have quite a large indigenous population. Their more of a nuisance than a danger though, walking around the streets pissed or sniffing paint, or trying to bum smokes of you. Knocking on your door asking to use your toilet (Happened to me in Kelmscott. I told them no, politely). Public transport in Perth isn't the best, up to an hour between buses in some areas. Your better of buying a cheap car really.
