Single female wanting to adopt...boy or girl?

I'm in my early 30s and college-educated (former teacher) with a supportive extended family, etc. I've been thinking about adoption for several years... and have always stopped around the same questions. 1)Age? (I'm okay with school age.) 2) Gender to request? How hard is for a first-time single mom to raise a young man? 3) Is it wrong for me to desire a child that definetely not biologically mine over a white child? (BTW - I'm not really into providing foster care at this point. Two foster parents have been murdered by their biological parents in this area and NO changes in visitation have been made.)

  1. Not really sure what you are asking.  Of course it is not wrong to adopt, if that is your question.  How could it be?

Try to organize your adoption thoughts and plans a bit more before you approach an agency.  You need to explore age and race and gender, or get counseling from an agency or counselor before you decide the particulars.

    Good luck to you!

  2. 1) As for age, go with what you are comfortable with.  If you can see yourself with schoolage kids then put down newborn to schoolage (but what age of schoolage, would you be ok with a 12 year old or younger).

    2) As for gender I can answer as a single mom of two boys that yes a single mom is capable of raising boys.  If you are ok with either s*x then put down that gender doesn't matter.  It will up your chances of adoption faster.

    3) You can specify what nationalities your are interested in and there is nothing wrong with you wanting to adopt.  There are so many children in the world with no home or family and they would love to have a mom to love them.  Some people are just made for adoption.

  3. I think it's great that you are willing to take an older child. I also think a non white child would be far easier to adopt. I'm sure it would not matter if it's a boy or girl as with any new parent. If there is no male in your life, you may want to consider a male role model if you adopt a son.
