Question:

Single-handed or double-handed backhand?

I play tennis for fun but I always have trouble with choosing which backhand I should use.

My double-handed backhand is a solid shot that is nothing special, I can get it in almost every time but can never hit winners with it.

My single-handed backhand is less consistent because the shot doesn't always go in but I can hit winners more often with it.

I don't know what to do! Please Help!

  1. well the single handed is good for approach shots while the double is good on the baseline.

use the double-handed backhand u are more consistent with it and just practice and u will be able to hit winners just fade around and do a forehand

  2. Well the best situtation for this problem wouldn't be to choose one or the other. Try practicing with one and see how you do and if its comfortable for you, if you keep getting the same results as before try the other one. Your bound to do better with either one or the other. But if you feel the need to chose one then i would go with the double back hand :P

  3. use the two-hander. it sounds like you're a bit of a beginner, and at that level most matches are lost, not won; meaning the player that loses makes mistakes, rather than the winner hitting winners to win. so keep whatever shot you can get in the most. also, if you just don't like your backhand, step around it and hit your forehand! for help with this watch some videos of carlos moya.

  4. It all depends on what is more comfortable for you. You will notice, not every professional player uses a  double handed backhand grip.  I personally use a single and feel I get more on it, for some reason. In fact its stronger then my forehand. I tried 2 handed and just doesnt feel right for me. try both for a couple of weeks, and you will then know, realize, which is better for you and your game.

  5. If you're comfortable hitting with one hand, I'd commit to just using that, and work to improve and become more consistent with it.  There are advantages to both  types of backhands, but the one-hander is more versatile (slice, topspin,  classic volleys) and gives you more reach.  The advantage of the two-hander is it gives players more power generally, but since you hit more winners anyway with the one-hander, then you don't have to worry about that.  Just develop it more for reliability, which can only happen if you commit to using it 100% of the time.

  6. hey there... umm i have experience this same problem but i think you should really stick with the singlehanded backhand if your most likely consistent with it. The doublehanded backhand is a very solid wing as it is really strong and powerful for returning either a serve or a powerful groundstroke from your opponent. The one hander is elegant and more precised shot but as my opinion its the wealer wing. for example if you see federer and nadal play nadal always beats federer because of his 1 hander. Just keep pratising with your doublehanded and give it a chance

    GOOD LUCK
