what do you think is the best single season that you have ever seen. If you were around when Ted Williams hit .406 and you think that is the best...please say so, but please dont say some season that you read about.

Just curious what is the best single season that you have ever personally witnessed.

For me:

Pitching season. Eckersley..the year when his ERA was right at 1.

Hitting. Bonds (yeah, I know about the steroids saga going on) but the year that he hit 73...with all those free passes. I have never seen someone dominate the game like he did then.

What is yours?

  1. Hitting : Babe Ruth 1927 - He hit more HR's than every other AL Team by himself. Not to mention the .356 BA / .486 OBP and 164 RBI.

Pitching : Pedro Martinez 2000 - Most dominant pitcher of the "Steroid Era" albeit for only about 4-5 seasons, but during that time, he was amazing.

    Relief : Eck 100%

Side note on best in a season... Will anybody ever get close to Ricky Henderson's 130 steals from 1982 again?  The closest since 1990 was Marquis Grissom's 78 in 1992. That could be considered one of the greatest offensive seasons of all time also.

  2. For me, Dwight Gooden in 1985...24-4...1.53 ERA...he was 2 runs lower than the league ERA that year..CY Young, unreal season...

For a hitter:  George Brett in 1980 hit .390..it was incredible wacthing him do that and make a run at .400...he was the MVP

  3. Hitting: Bonds 2004. (Yes, 2004. His 2001 would be second or third.)

Starting pitching: Martinez 2000 (closely followed by his 1999).

    Middle relief pitching: Zimmerman 1999.

    Closer relief pitching: Eckersley 1990.
