Question:

Single servings of red wine?

Every article I read says that having a glass of red wine a day is very beneficial. However, my husband cannot drink any....so my question is, if I buy a bottle of red wine, can I drink it throughout the week? Would it still stay fresh and have the same benefits? How would I store it?

Thank you.

  1. You are the perfect candidate due to your reasoning for drinking and amount you'll drink for a Reidel wine decanter:

If you were going to a few different open bottles at once, I have interesting restaurant type corks, where you put the rubber cork in the bottle and then place this plastic pump over the cork - simply pull a few times and you take out the air.  Look that up on line if you have a chance.

Bottom line, your situation is fine just the way you plan to go about it.  You also won't get sick even if you left it for a month.  You'd probably want to turn that into cooking wine by that point though...

  2. Store it in a cool spot. (Not necessary to have the cork down if you're going to drink it in one week.)

Generally, 3-4 full glasses per bottle.

Benefits will be the same. And fresh. (Actually, letting the wine breath a little helps.

  3. Yes, wine will stay good for a few days after opening.

Here are a few tips to make the wine stay fresh for longer.

    - Buy a few 375mL bottles.  When you open up a bottle, pour a glass for that night, then move the remainder into 2 of these 375mL bottles, then cork both.  Obviously one will be full.  You can store this any way you like.  The partially fully bottle should be corked and refrigerated.  (You can use spare, cleaned champagne half bottles or ice wine bottles, which are usually 375mL instead of buying empty bottles.  The benefit of buying new bottles would be that you can get both the Bordeaux and Pinot shape so that the little bottles match the original's shape).

-- If you get magnum (1.5L) bottles, then you can use two washed regular bottles instead.

    - Keeping red wine in the fridge once it is opened is a good idea to keep it stay fresh longer.  Just take it out of the fridge 30-40 minutes before drinking to let it warm up.  Or, pour a glass of the cold wine and wait for that to warm up, even better.

    - Store unopened bottles in a cool dark place.  The fridge is not necessary for red wines.  Preferably horizontal unless it will be opened within a couple days, then vertical is fine.

The basic goal is to minimize the amount of air which the wine is exposed to, and to increase the time it takes bacteria to breed -- that's why the fridge is a good idea.  Anything else you can think of that accomplishes those goals will be a good way to store the wine and prevent it from spoiling.  If any wine smells like vinegar, it's soured or atleast souring; don't bother pouring it to test.

  4. To answer your question yes you will still have the same health benefits. Just remember that a serving of wine is only 6oz. In the amount of time you will be drinking it there should not be a problem. Red wine is supposed to be stored and drank warm. Just make sure that you put the cork back in the bottle just not all the way to keep the air out.

Or you can go to your local liquor store, or grocery store, and they sell wine bottle caps that will go in the place of the cork, and they are much easier to use then the cork.
