  1. I own a few Ruger # 1 rifles, in various chamberings, and have never felt handicapped in the field, no matter what type of game I'm hunting, be it hogs, bear, etc. The secret is to purchase a butt stock shellholder, so that the 2nd shot is right there, if it is needed in a tight situation. I know some guys might be afraid of hunting dangerous game with a single shot, but they can always use a bolt action! Don't ever think, that just because I have only 1 in the pipe, that I should take a backseat to a hunter shooting a bolt action.

  2. I can't say that i prefer it over my pump shotguns but, i do have a single shot .410.  I've had it for a couple years and can't say I've killed anything with it but, it is definitely a challenge to hit clay pigeons with!!  I think last time I broke 7 out of 10 with it.  I don't shoot guns with only a single bead very well so that's why I don't use it often.

  3. Have a single shot firearm??  I sure do.... A NEF Pardner 12 gauge shotgun... Its not my favorite for general target practice or deer hunting but have taken it out to hunt varmints.... I own several expensive rifles and shotguns but do like to take the single shot out a couple of times a summer into the woods.  I'll just sit there for hours until a rabbit or some other little unsuspecting  critter gets close and I blast him!!!   My favorite? Not at all... Do I enjoy it? I sure do even though I may only use 2 or 3 times a year....

  4. I use single shot guns. Mostly black powder but also 22 rifles, center fire rifle, shotguns and pistols.

If you are a good shot and don’t have dangerous animals about, it all one needs.

And dove hunting with a single 12 ga is challenging. I learned to carry 2 or 3 rounds between my fingers while holding the gun for faster reloading.

Most hunts only take one or 2 shots anyway.

This is why I have little interest in tactical weapons. It only takes one shot from my smoke pole for meat.

  5. I love to shoot my T-C Hawken .50, along with the pair of Traditions .50 'Trapper' pistols I have matched it with as accessories for my 'mountain man' outfit.

This only goes for black powder muzzleloaders, not my modern arsenal.

  6. I would take my single shot handi rifle in .270 over any other gun, its just the feeling that you only have one shot to do what your set out to do, so you need to make it count.

  7. When I am bored with carrying a rifle to hunt with  I fall back to my T/C contender in 7x30 Waters.  With a sling it is lighter and easier to carry.

  8. I have a traditional blackpowder rifle with buckhorn sights. with regular public land in Missouri out of control during firearms season, I use that on public land that's muzzleloader / archery only.

I also have a single shot 20ga modified which was my first gun. We have a squirrel season that starts in May so I use that until late september when I switch to a 22 bolt action. I kill so many squirrels every year so I don't care that I can't shoot as fast as the pump guns. So if one gets away, he gets away.

  9. I have a Handi Rifle in 30/30 and I love to shoot it.

My personal belief is that I know that I won't get a second shot, so I had better make the first one count.

I would like to try getting in muzzle loading someday, but just not right now
