Question:

Sink gurgling loudly?

I have a sink in my bedroom, and it's started gurgling loudly in the middle of the night, and then makes a sound like water's running (but it's not). I live in a shared flat, and there's 5 other rooms, I haven't had a chance to ask them whether theirs does it too.

It's my landlord's job to pay for any plumbing etc, but he's SO lazy, I was just wondering if there was anything I could do myself, given that I have fairly minimal DIY skills... but I can follow instructions well... it's the kind of sink with a pedestal, should i take the underneath bit off and see if the pipes are clogged? Or just hassle my landlord until it gets fixed?

  1. Sounds like a plugged vent pipe...The gurgling is caused by the air trying to get past the water. Definitely a landlord issue.

  2. Well, I don't think that this noise is caused by a blockage. I tried my hand at a bit of DIY plumbing on the kitchin sink. and guess what, I got the gurgles as well. Don't forget this is a new installation with the gurgles. It took me quite some time to figure the problem, and what I discovered was a very simple answer. The waste pipe went into the gulley as it should do, but not into the water in the gulley. what was happening was that, with the waste pipe directely in the water it created an air block in the pipe so as soon as the water went through the gurgling started. When I shortened the pipe to allow the water to run free (take the waste pipe out of the water in the gulley) the noise stopped. Hurrayyyyyyyyyyy. Try it anyway see how you go.

  3. My sink does this a few times and what my Dad does is take the bit off of it and check to see if it's blocked- most times it is.

And then he gets this wierd pully plunger and you can hear the water inside flushing away.

Run the tap and after all the water has gone and there is still a gurgling noise a few seconds afterwards, hassle the landlord.

    ;)
