Siobhan-Marie O'Connor dominates in Belgrade: Day one – European Long Course Junior Championships
Siobhan-Marie O'Connor of Great Britain secured the gold medal in the Women’s 400m Individual Medley meet in the first session of the 2011 European Long Course Junior Championships at Belgrade, Serbia, on Thursday, July 7.
Christian Scheruebl grabbed the Men’s 400m freestyle crown in another meet of the day.
Initially, O'Connor snared the Women’s 400m IM crown with a winning time of 4 minutes and 46.61 seconds. After the meet, O'Connor asserted, “I am really happy with that swim. I knew I had to go for it and lead from the start so I really took it out in the
first 200m and was able keep it up. It was a great start to the meet for me, as the 200m Individual Medley is my focus event.”
Sara Joo of Hungary wound up second in a time of 4 minutes and 48.25 seconds, whereas, Reka Gyorgy settled third with a time of 4 minutes and 49.80 seconds.
In the second meet, Christian Scheruebl of Austria took home the Men’s 400m freestyle crown with a victorious time of 3 minutes and 51.75 seconds. Detti Gabriele earned second place honours in 3 minutes and 52.05 seconds, whereas, Michal Szuba of Poland
rounded out the top three in 3 minutes and 52.77 seconds.
Earlier, Poland’s Donata Klijanska snagged the Women’s 800m freestyle title with a sterling time of 8 minutes and 40.48 seconds. Netherlands’ Esmee Vermeulen was placed second in 8 minutes and 43.56 seconds, while Great Britain’s Rachael Williamson settled
third after she touched the finishing wall in 8 minutes and 44.10 seconds.
Ireland’s Sycerika McMahon won the Women’s 50m breast-stroke event with an undisputed time of 32.00 seconds, while Anna Sztankovics of Hungary was placed second in 32.02 seconds. Finland’s Jenna Laukkanen finished third in time of 32.11 seconds.
Additionally, Croatia’s Mihael Vukic won the Men’s 50m butterfly meet with a time of 23.90 seconds. Ukraine’s Yevgen Koptyelov finished second in 24.50 seconds, whereas, French swimmer, Matthias Bellance settled third on the podium in a time of 24.56 seconds.
