Siobhan-Marie O’Connor wins Women's 200m IM title: British Gas ASA National Championships 2011
Siobhan-Marie O'Connor nabbed the gold title in the Women’s 200m Individual Medley and 50m breast-stroke finals at the 2011 British Gas ASA National Championships in Sheffield, England, on June 14, 2011.
O’Connor edged out Lucy Spencer in the Women’s 200m IM race after she ended her swim in a winning time of 2 minutes and 14.14 seconds. Spencer claimed the silver title after she touched the finishing wall in a time of 2 minutes and 14.36 seconds.
After putting up a scintillating performance in the race, O’Connor said, “I haven’t rested for this meet so I’m stunned to have swam so fast. The aim was to swim well, not to make the World Championships team.”
Sophie Allen secured the third place on the podium in the respective meet, with a time of 2 minutes and 14.45 seconds, while Stacey Tadd wound up fourth in 2 minutes and 14.52 seconds.
She further added, “I’m amazed to make the senior qualifying time. I’m due to swim in the European Juniors next month but will sit down with my coach now to discuss what will be the main focus this year. I’m just so shocked.”
In the Women’s 50m breast-stroke final, Anastasia Christofou took home the golden crown with a winning time of 32.04 seconds. Meanwhile, Kathryn Johnstone won the silver medal in a time of 32.27 seconds and Georgina Heyn snared bronze after touching the
finishing wall in a time of 32.30 seconds.
Earlier, Jemma Lowe won the Women’s 100m butterfly title with a victorious time of 57.43 seconds, while Dana Vollmer was surprisingly placed sixth in the same meet with a time of 57.50 seconds.
In the Women’s 100m back-stroke race, Elizabeth Simmonds clinched the gold medal with a sterling time of 59.86 seconds, while Kristopher Gilchrist topped the Men’s 100m breast-stroke meet after he ended his swim in a time of 1 minute and 00.99 seconds.
Day one of the 2011 British Gas ASA National Championships ended with many stunning performances of British swimmers in their respective meets.
