Sippy Cup Trouples, Please help me find a good one?

I have tried, gerber, platex, nuk and various other sippy cups. My son is 11 months old and knows how to drink out of one but lets it run out of his mouth, he takes a drink and then lets it run down the front of him. Is there a sippy cup out there to help this. I have bought the ones for 6+ months and even tried the ones for 12 months, nothing seems to be helping. I am wanting to take him off the bottle and go to a sippy but this is driving me crazy, please help.

  1. my son is now 16mos and occasionally he still lets beverages run down his chin. I think its intentional. I didnt start him on a sippy til he was almost 1, I was also told that the "valve" in the sippy was not very helpful, my doctor described it as a "glorified bottle". At first we did have some big messes to clean up but he adjusted to it rather quickly. Now he is drinking from a straw, but we use the sippy, without the valve" when we are on the go.

  2. it's a learning thing nothing to do with the cup itself, your son is getting used to the faster flow of a sippy cup over a bottle, to see the big difference put water in a cup and in a bottle suck on both the cup give at least twice as much as the bottle. one thing that helped a little with my daughter (now 12 mos) was making sure the cup did not have the venting hole (gerber does not playtex does not sure off had of the others) this makes the flow a little slower and makes for less dribbling.

  3. hey my daughter did the same thing!  she didn't want to swallow the drink because she wasn't used to the sippy shape in her mouth.  try a sippy with a straw, or let her drink out of a regular cup (a hassle, i know, but better than it getting all over her).  also, there's bibs that catch food...i have a rubber one that doesn't have any holes in the bottom and i put that on her if we're out & about with just a sippy or about to leave the house so she doesn't get water on her clothes.

also, i just started using the disposable plastic sippy's from "the first years" (you can get them at walmart) and just rewash them, they're only a few dollars for a pack of 4 and they work MUCH better than the other sippy's because the holes are much smaller so she doesn't get as much in her mouth at once.

  4. I think it's a phase also, I don't think any sippy cup out there would keep him from letting the water come back down his chin.  When he takes a drink and swallows, really praise him!

  5. We have had really great luck with the Nuby Sports Sippers.  They have a soft "straw" type spout on them which ends up pretty far back in the mouth like a bottle nipple does.  Babies tend to mimic a tongue thrust sucking on them, which is easier to swallow.  They also seem to not have as fast of a flow as some other sippy cups.  Here's a picture.

  6. it sounds like a phase to me..it doesn't seem like its the sippy cup since you said he lets it run out of his mouth

  7. I got a set of cups from Tupperware that have a lid and a straw hole that almost never leaks.  It solved my sippy cup problem and the spilling problem with a regular open cup.  She loves drinking from a straw.

  8. try the noubby ones my kids love them they only cost like $2 @ walmart.

  9. Walmart and Target both have sippy cups with a rubber insert in the lid that prevents leaking.  You have to suck on it a little bit, but those babies are spill proof!

I cant find the cups I am talking about in the online stores, but they usually have them if you just go down there and look. Good luck!

  10. Either he is doing this on purpose because he likes it, or he has an issue with his jaw muscles and swallowing, etc.  If he does this with all drinks and liquid, I would consult your doctor.  And no, there is no such sippy cup that will prevent him from doing this.

  11. use a bib its a phase i have 6 brothers he'll grow out of it very soon my mom used to put 2 bibs on at once at that helped a whole lot ...hope i helped
