Sir Alex Ferguson: Berbatov up there with the best
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Dimitar Berbatov has proved that lightning pace is not necessary for a striker to be world class.
Normally, speed is considered to be a big prerequisite associated with strikers and successful teams, especially with Arsenal putting so much emphasis on playing with pace.
Berbatov, however, is clearly not blessed with speed, but has shown that if a striker has other areas of the game covered he can be an asset. The Bulgarian has managed to score 19 goals in the EPL this season, and in his last 2
games he managed to find the net 5 times helping Manchester United go clear on top of the table.
"Confidence is the most important thing," said Ferguson.
"Every striker is different. Teddy Sheringham had no pace. Alan Shearer had no pace either but they were great forwards. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ruud-van-Nistelrooy-c31966 wasn't quick but he was a really good goalscorer.”
Sir Alex reiterated that every striker has different qualities that set him apart. Ferguson referred to Gary Lineker from Everton and Ian Rush of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 and said that both were entirely different but equally successful. The
United boss said that some players are quick on their feet when they get the ball in the box, and need a yard or two to make things happen. Ferguson said that Allan Clarke for Leeds was that sort of a player, and had the ability to move quickly in the box.
The season has just crossed the halfway mark, and Berbatov already has 20 goals in all competitions. With a significant amount of games to go in the Premier League and other competitions, the goal tally for the Bulgarian is sure
to increase.
Sir Alex said that when a player is in such a form, every manager hopes that he can carry on in the same vein for as long as possible. Ferguson said that Berbatov has a great chance of getting 30 or more goals by the end of the
season.
Dimitar Berbatov won the Premier League in his first season at Manchester United. The Bulgarian came to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 in 2005 when he was signed by London club Tottenham from German side Bayern Leverkusen. He had two and a half seasons
at Tottenham Hotspur and expressed his desire to play for a bigger club which would give him a chance to play in UEFA Champions League. He did make it to the final of the Champions League with United in his very first season, but the Red Devils ended up on
the losing side against Barcelona in 2009.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dimitar-Berbatov-c11254 is now 30 and has 18 months left on his contract at Old Trafford. He was signed from Tottenham back in 2008 for a sum of 30 million pounds. David Gill, the chief executive at Manchester United, is expected to hold
talks with the front-man soon, in order to extend his stay at Old Trafford.
Manchester United boss Sir Alex, though, has made it clear that he is not at all worried about the contract situation of Berbatov.
