Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill meet to avoid Wayne Rooney ‘saga’
The name on everybody’s lips before Manchester United’s Champions League group match against Bursaspor was undoubtedly that of Wayne Rooney.
Just hours before the Red Devils kicked off against the Turkish champions, the want-away Rooney released a statement confirming his desire to leave the club, stating a lack of ambition as his primary reason for not signing a new contract.
After the match, which the hosts won 1-0 courtesy of a stunning strike from the in-form Nani, Sir Alex Ferguson again faced a barrage of queries about the current predicament facing the club. Despite reading out a statement on Tuesday, revealing his “disappointment” at Rooney’s controversial decision, the United boss was still left to fend off a host of unanswered questions.
Reluctant to get into any further discussions about the topic which has dominated newspaper headlines in recent days, Ferguson confirmed he will meet with the club’s chief executive, David Gill, at 10am BST this morning to discuss United’s next move.
The Scot is desperate to prevent Rooney’s pending departure from causing further distractions, and insisted that his focus is firmly on Sunday afternoon’s Premier League clash against Stoke City.
"What is really important is for us to put it to bed, we don't want it to become a saga," Ferguson said.
"Sunday's game against Stoke is the most important thing. This is a bagatelle, believe me."
However, Rooney-gate shows little sign of abating this morning, with Manchester City still heavily rumored to be close to the England international’s signature.
As one of the most stunning transfer stories in recent years, Ferguson may have to get used to the fact that the Rooney “saga” will continue to rumble on and on, until January at the earliest.
