Sir Alex Ferguson becomes Manchester United's longest standing manager, speaks on his achievement
This Sunday marks a landmark achievement in Sir Alex Ferguson’s managerial career. He becomes the longest standing manager of Manchester United FC.
The previous record was held by Sir Matt Busby who remained a United manager for a duration of 24 years, 1 month and 13 days.
Ferguson took over the club in 1986 and took the club to great heights under his leadership. United have won 11 English Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups, 4 Football League Cups and 2 UEFA Champions League titles under the Scottish manager.
Fergie was critical of the way the clubs deal with their managers. It has been witnessed in the Premier League that if the manager is unable to produce the desired results he is shown the door. Some managers are sacked on the argument that they did not share
the vision of the club, as was the case with recently fired Blackburn Rovers’ manager Sam Allardyce.
Ferguson said, “I think it’s very difficult these days with the life we’re in now, very very difficult. There’s intense pressure on managers now. The unfortunate thing is, it’s actually becoming quite trendy to sack a manager in difficult circumstances.
It’s baffling and it’s a serious threat to how clubs get run and how they conduct themselves. I don’t know the answers to it, but what I can say is that a manager’s job, whatever he’s getting paid, it’s not worth it.”
On breaking Busby’s record, Ferguson saluted the former manager and stated that his services for the club will never be forgotten.
It was during Matt’s days, in 1958, that the Munich catastrophe occurred; United lost 23 members of the club including 8 1st team players. However, Busby was able to rebuild the team and claim European glory within the next decade.
Ferguson added, “I seemed to think his record would go on forever. I think the reason I felt Sir Matt’s record would last is he joined the club after the war. Then there was the emotional issue of the Munich air disaster which must have been a tremendous
burden to carry and responsibility, you know rebuilding the club and then he went on to win the European Cup within 10 years which was an incredible achievement.”
Fellow professional managers have also congratulated Sir Alex on his achievement. Among them were England’s manager http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabio-c13152 Capello and Chelsea’s Carlo Ancelotti.
The Italians were of the opinion that they were amazed to see the burning desire to win trophies that Sir Alex Ferguson still carries within him, at an age of 68.
