Sir Alex Ferguson claims http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 owner Roman Abramovich is obsessed with UEFA Champions League
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has asserted that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is obsessed with winning the most prestigious award at the club level football, the UEFA Champions League.
Ferguson said, “It does seem to be an obsession with Chelsea to win the European Cup. The owner has every much nailed his colours to the mast in that respect. To have an obsession of winning the European Cup is stretching yourself a wee bit. At the end of
the day it is a very difficult competition to win.”
No London club has ever won the Champions League and Chelsea came very close to claiming the European award. However, the Blues were beaten on penalties against Manchester United in the Champions League 2008 final at Moscow.
Chelsea have become one of the strongest forces in the Champions League since Roman Abramovich took the charge of the club. The Blues have made it to four semi-finals and a final of the Champions League.
For the past two seasons, the team which knocked Chelsea out of the Champions League had gone on to win the competition. In 2009, Barcelona overcame the Londoners in the semi-final before defeating Manchester United in the final. In the 2009-10 season, it
was http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 Milan who defeated Chelsea before winning the final against Bayern Munich.
Chelsea are now trailing by one goal against Manchester United after Wayne Rooney’s first half strike in the first leg at Stamford Bridge proved to be the only goal of the match.
The Blues will now play the second leg at Old Trafford- a venue where United have not lost a single match in the ongoing 2010-11 season.
Moreover, United have an amazing record of never being knocked out of a Champions League tie after winning the first leg and Sir Alex Ferguson wants to keep this extraordinary streak alive.
Even though Manchester United are in a strong position to win the Premier League and FA Cup, Sir Alex Ferguson desperately wants to triumph in the UEFA Champions League which will help him emulate his 1999 treble winning season with United.
Sir Alex added, “For any club when the expectations are high you come to a situation where it is all or nothing. People talk about us winning the league but we are desperate to win this game.”
The second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final between Manchester United and Chelsea will be played at Old Trafford on 12 April, 2011.
