Sir Alex Ferguson hails Manchester United’s win over Schalke 04 as one of the best in Europe
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed his team’s performance in the 2-0 victory against Schalke 04 in the first leg of the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League at the Veltins-Arena on Tuesday, April 26, 2011.
United are now almost certain to book a place in the final of the competition to be played at the Wembley Stadium in London on May 28, 2011.
Ferguson has hailed the victory as one of the best performances of his team in Europe’s most prestigious competition. The Red Devils tormented the opposition defence with a flurry of attacks. Schalke goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Manuel-Neuer-c23424 made a string of phenomenal saves
to deny United, otherwise the score line could easily have been 3-0 in the first half. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ryan-Giggs-c31985 eventually broke the deadlock for the visitors, followed by Wayne Rooney’s 69th minute strike which sealed the game.
The United manager compared this win to one of his famous victories against Juventus in 1999, the year they won the treble. However, in that game United were trailing by 2-0 and managed to win 3-2 to qualify for the final.
Talking to the reporters Ferguson said, “We've had some fantastic performances in Europe. But I think it's certainly one of the best, yes. Juventus will always be high on the list but I think this ranks up there too.”
“I was delighted. It was a top performance. Credit to the players and their belief in each other. It was a tremendous performance." "There was a fantastic atmosphere (inside Schalke's Veltins-Arena) tonight but it never bowed our players once. They kept
on playing their football, showing confidence and trust in one another,” added the long standing manager.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Scotland-c756 manager praised the contribution of every member of the team and believes that their passing was extremely good.
Ferguson went on to praise the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Royal-95-c40387 Blues’ goalkeeper Neuer and reckons that it was the best performance he has seen from a goalkeeper against United. The manager feared that after his brilliant saves in the first 45 minutes, his side might not get a goal
past the German number one.
The second leg of the encounter will be played at Old Trafford on May 4, 2011.
