Sir Alex Ferguson lashes out at big spenders in transfer market
Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson has lashed out at the free spending neighbours, claiming that it was a Kamikaze mission that Manchester City were aiming to achieve.
Ferguson refrained from taking any names, but his suggestions were clear that he was targeting Roberto Mancini’s cash-rich club. Manchester City have recently unveiled their latest signings in the shape of young Inter Milan striker Mario Balotelli along with Aston Villa midfielder James Milner.
When Manchester City completes their signing-spree with the inclusion of James Milner, the total spending of the club will go up to 125 million pounds this summer. That is by far the highest amount ever spent by any English Premier League club.
The club is also expected to pay wages of around 200,000 pounds a week to Yaya Toure. Situations like these have forced Ferguson to say that the transfer market does not have any value left for him.
However critics see it as a defensive move from Ferguson who said that due to the immense debts at the club, Ferguson is short handed by cash and that is the reason he is lashing out at his old rivals.
Manchester United made low key signings this season. Javier Hernandez, Chris Smalling and Bebe have been the only 3 players brought in this season. Ferguson said that the deals made by the clubs with insane amount of money would make the transfer market inflate to a huge degree.
The Scot explained that spending spree’s have been a trend in English football in last few seasons. Fergusson went on to say that rich businessmen take over clubs and start splashing their cash all around the player market which actually makes player prices to shoot up to a greater degree than normal.
He said that it is simply astonishing how much money clubs are spending to get players that would not even make too much of a difference to their teams. The Manchester United manager believed that such spending is not healthy for the club. However, if the wealthy owners think it is best for the club, then Fergusson thinks that they have the right to use their money the way they like.
Sir Alex said that he expects the trend to continue for at least 2 to 3 more years and maybe then the clubs would realise that spending huge sums of money is not the answer.
Manchester United was reportedly interested in attaining the services of two German players - Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil - both of whom have signed for Real Madrid. Ferguson said that investing in young players still remains the key focus of the club and the fruits of hard work are there for everyone to see at Old Trafford. He said that when a youngster is signed, the price is very reasonable and there is a margin to mould the player in the way the club wants.
The Manchester United manager, who has earned great success at the club in the last 2 decades, said that when players like Giggs, Scholes, Beckham and Neville came through the ranks of United Academy, he knew that he had a crop of players that would serve the club for a long time to come. He said Giggs and Scholes are still at the peak of their powers and they are prime examples of how talent can be harnessed rather than bought.
Finally, Sir Alex Ferguson said that when the season ends, it will be clear to everyone that money cannot buy success and it’s a long term process rather than a quick fix.
