Sir Alex Ferguson makes an emotional comeback to his boyhood club Rangers; Wayne Rooney set to start
The fiery Scotsman returns to his home city of Glasgow, to face Rangers on Wednesday night. Sir Alex Ferguson played for the club from 1967 to 1969 where he scored 35 goals in 66 appearances. Manchester United is sitting atop of
Group C and is on brink of qualification to the next round. A win against Rangers will certainly guarantee their passage in the knockout stage.
Rangers, who lost to Valencia on match-day four away from home, will be keen to re-launch their bid to be among the representatives of Group C in the next stage of the UEFA Champions League. According to reports, Wayne Rooney is
expected to start against Rangers. Rooney, who has lost the confidence of some of the Manchester United fans, will be eager to rekindle the love between him and the Manchester United faithful. He made a successful return to the first-team in a 2-0 win over
Wigan at Old Trafford. There were mixed emotions as Rooney came on as substitute with some quarters booing the Englishman for his lack of respect shown to the club by publically announcing his decision to quit United.
The gaffer is hoping Rooney gets back to his goal-scoring form:
“It was a quiet return for him, he got involved in a few things, but he will start against Rangers on Wednesday. He will play 90 minutes, it’s the perfect chance,” he told manutd.com.
Rooney has to live up to his 250K-a-week wage and win over United and English fans after an unconvincing World Cup campaign and poor goal-scoring form for United. Sir Alex hopes his squad will be fit and eager to perform at their
level best. Sir Alex has no fresh injury news and will be able to field his best eleven after giving opportunity to young stars against Wigan. Chicharito, Nani and Berbatov are all in favourable form and he will be hoping that there will be no injuries to
deplete his squad before the encounter.
Sir Alex's men can expect a hostile environment at Ibrox. Rangers might come into this match as underdogs but they are definitely no pushovers. They can hold their own, especially on their home turf and their roaring supporters
in Ibrox. Kenny Miller scored a hat-trick this weekend and will be eager to add to his tally against United. Rangers, who slipped to third on match day four, will be looking to collect maximum points in order to move into second place which will enable them
to qualify for the next round.
Rangers need to hope other results go their way and Valencia slip up in their encounter for them to move into knockout round. Rangers will also want to put one over their former player and local boy Sir Alex Ferguson. This is a
mouth-watering tie with both teams looking to assert themselves.
