Sir Alex Ferguson on English Premier League title: ‘It is there for everyone to win or lose’
Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson has predicted that the English Premier League title will be a closely contested affair.
It has been witnessed in previous years that the Premier League race becomes a two-horse race after half of the season has been played.
However, Ferguson was of the opinion that this time around, it will not be the usual affair as there are at least 5 to 6 teams capable of clinching the title at the end of the season in May.
He said, “So many times over the last few years, people have spoken about the top four when there has been one of those periods where we are all within a couple of points of each other and said this could be a really exciting league.”
He added, “By the end of the year, two teams are contesting it. That could happen again this season but on the other hand, if it were to be five or six involved right until the end, it would be fantastic for the league. It is the
kind of league we dream of."
Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City have emerged as serious threat to the dominance of Manchester United and Chelsea this season. In the past 6 years, Premier League has been won by either United or http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786; however, Ferguson
believes that this year nothing can be said for sure.
Sir Alex pointed out that the top teams have struggled to maintain consistency and have allowed their rivals to gain valuable ground on them.
Upon mentioning the recent upsets caused to the big teams by weaker opposition, the Scotsman said, “In every set of games this season, you see a surprise result. We were disappointed to lose a late goal at Birmingham on Tuesday,
then the next day Arsenal drop two points against a Wigan team with 10 men and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wolves-c40952 go to Anfield and win.”
Fergie was of the opinion that unprecedented results were because of the competitive nature of the English Premier League.
Manchester United enter the new year as the league leaders with 38 points from 18 games. Their city rivals, Manchester City are equal on points but have played 2 more games.
Arsenal are on 36 points from 19 games, and occupy 3rd place. Reigning champions Chelsea are in 4th place with 34 points and are 1 point ahead of Tottenham Hotspur.
It is interesting to note that the top 5 ranked clubs in the Premier League are separated by just 5 points.
