Sir Alex Ferguson reacts to 3-3 draw at Goodison park
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was disappointed with the result his side managed at Goodison park, claiming that undoubtedly, the Red Devils self-destructed in the dying moments of the match.
The second half of the contest was dominated by Manchester United’s superior play and lead 3-1 till the 91st minute. In injury time, however, Everton sought a never-seen-before comeback, when midfielder Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta went on to score, taking the match to a 3-3 draw.
The game was sewn up for the Red Devils and there was no chance of Everton coming back. However, David Moyes’s men capitalized on United’s slack defending in the dying moments of the contest, paving way for a shock draw. United looked in no way loosing the match, following impressive performances by Nani and Dimitar Berbatov but lost two crucial points from this encounter.
Last season, United lost their hatrick winning streak of Premier league titles owing to just one point between them and winners Chelsea and are well aware that any slip ups this season would crush their hopes of lifting the coveted trophy for a record 19th time.
United have managed only 8 points from a possible twelve, losing four crucial points on draws against Fulham and Everton. Its a good result if compared to last season as United lost both these fixtures 3-0. Nonetheless, just like the Fulham game, where United went in front twice, Everton managed a come from behind draw and perhaps deserved to teach the overconfident Red Devils a lesson.
"From a completely comfortable position we've thrown it away, simple as that. Our last two away games have been like that. We lost a goal with two minutes to go against Fulham, and it's the same again today.”, claimed Manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
The manager continued claiming that his side was wasteful and had chances to completely dismantle the home side. The manager argued that for most part of the game, United were the better side and was impressed by his team composure. Ferguson added that his squad did manage to play good football but have actually thrown away all that in the end.
The Red Devil’s cheif, however, did single out one top performer from his side, naming goal scoring striker Dimitar Berbatov as his top player. The manager praised the Bulgarian, claiming him to be his side’s best player and added that the 29 year old was “absolutely brilliant” at some occasions. However, all that praise was off no use and may be forgotten as United lost two important points.
On the topic of Berbatov, the Reds boss claimed that Berbatov was a great player and even though he didn’t manage to reach his top forms for the previous seasons, yet he has come out of it now and hopes that the lad keeps on building on it. The manager added that in the Everton game, the Bulgarian was just outstanding.
Moving on, Sir Alex confirmed the news of the return of Rio Ferdinand, as the manager expected the English Captain to feature in the Champions league clash against Glasgow Rangers. Ferdinand was injured in South Africa, following a late challenge by team mate Emile Heskey. The 32 year-old has, however, made an earlier than expected recovery and would be bolstering United’s back line.
United would be hosting Glasgow Rangers on Tuesday in a UEFA Champions League group stage match. Ferguson would be reunited with his long time friend and colleague, Walter Smith, who was a former assistant coach at Manchester United. Smith also linked up with Ferguson in Scottish National side and both have remained close friends. Smith is the current manager of Scottish Champions, Glasgow Rangers and nothing but a gruelling encounter can be expected.
