Sir Alex Ferguson sets Dimitar Berbatov a 25 goal target for the season
Sir Alex Ferguson has given a target of 25 goals for the season to his goal scoring machine, Dimitar Berbatov.
The Bulgarian scored both the goals in Manchester United’s victory over Sunderland last night and showed that being dropped for the Arsenal game after scoring 5 goals against Blackburn had no effect on the striker as he continued his golden touch in front
of goal.
Berbatov narrowly missed out on his hat-trick last night as the upright came in the way of striker’s second hat-trick in as many games.
With two goals last night, Berbatov has taken his season’s tally of goals to 14 and his manager feels that if he can get 11 more from 21 remaining games this season, his side will have a good chance of landing an unprecedented 19th league title
and become the most successful side in English football history, overtaking Liverpool’s tally of 18 league titles.
Ferguson said after the match last night that Berbatov’s form has been phenomenal of late and it was one of the toughest decisions of his 24 year career at Old Trafford to confine Berbatov to the bench for the game against Arsenal but he was happy that Berbatov
didn’t lose heart and continued his goal scoring in the game against Sunderland.
Ferguson feels that 25 goals for Berba and a similar tally from one more of his players will be enough for Manchester United to pip title rivals, Arsenal and Chelsea.
After the match, Alex Ferguson said, "We are hitting good form, the football was fantastic. We could have scored five by half-time." Ferguson, whose men lead the table by two points, added, "Some of the interchanges and the combination play was very good."
Manchester United are the only team in the league this season that has not lost a single game but the manager feels that going unbeaten through the whole season is unachievable.
United’s only defeat this season came against West Ham in the Carling Cup when his youngsters crashed out of the competition at the quarter final stage losing 4-0 to Hammers.
United have now played 17 games in the season and have a two point lead at the top of the table with Manchester City in second place but have played 2 games more than the Red Devils.
Arsenal are currently 5 points adrift of Manchester United while Chelsea are 6 points behind and with Manchester United famous for hitting their top form after the turn of the year, Sir Alex feels that United have a good chance of winning the title this
year.
Arsenal will face Chelsea in what will be a top of the table six pointer at Emirates tonight and if both the teams failed to conjure up a win, United will go into the new year with a substantial lead over their title rivals.
Sir Alex’s side strolled to a win last night over Sunderland without its two first team players, Nani and Darren Fletcher, who had minor niggle in hip and groin respectively but the manager feels that both the players will be back in time for United’s next
game at St. Andrews against Birmingham on Tuesday.
If United win their game at Birmingham, they will be in pole position to win the title at the half way stage in the season. History suggests that a team that is at the top of the table at Christmas has gone on to win the title 14 times out of 18 in the Premier
League era.
Although, it is too early to predict the title but it seems like United are hitting the top form at the right time and it will take some doing to take the title away from United this season.
