Alex Ferguson really knows how to stay in the headlines. At first, he had admitted that he was about to retire soon, maybe until the end of next season. His recent interview to the British press claims that his plans have changed once again. He had even named David Scott Moyes as his successor. Many people including Jose Mourinho had started eyeing the throne at Old Trafford.
News was floating around the gossip circles that Ferguson will retire at the end of the next season. Ferguson, who turns 69 on December 31, had confirmed to his close friends that he was on his way out. Quite recently, the news desks had reported that he had already told the Manchester United board about his decision and it was only a matter of time before he retired. Old Trafford’s throne was all set to be handed over to a new man.
Nevertheless, that does not seem like the story now… or at least for now.
Alex Ferguson has worked as manager for Manchester United over a span of 23 years. He recently denied any rumors that he was retiring. The 68-year-old Scotsman said, “I’ve no intention of retiring.” He explained, “I’ve said time and again, the only thing that determines my staying here is my health. Unfortunately for you lot I’m in rude health.”
He earlier admitted that he had other matters to attend to but now it seems that he has figured them out. He went on to say, “I have to accept there’s pressure in life. I can deal with it.”
Manchester United have won three Premier League titles successively and currently, they are in hot pursuit for the forth title this season. Chelsea is the only team in their way who are breathing behind their backs.
A lot will be decided this Sunday, when Carlo Ancelotti’s team will be up against Wigan Athletic. Manchester United one the other hand will face off against Stoke City. Both Wigan United and Stoke City are teams that are not as strong as Chelsea and United.
However, both the teams have caused various upsets in the past. Stoke City is at the 10th position while Wigan is at the 15th position in the points table. All teams in the English Premier League have played their allotted 37 matches. This Saturday' is going to decide who wins the EPL for the year 2010.
Both teams are expected to win their respective matches in order to win the Championship. Manchester United has 82 points and Chelsea has 83 points in the table. Even if Chelsea loses, a draw will not be good enough for Manchester United to win the EPL, as Chelsea will go through due to a better goal difference.
Ferguson commented earlier on the situation stating, “After this, there are only two games left. We can let Chelsea deal with their situation and we will deal with ours. I don’t know if it’s an advantage this time of the year to play first or second.”
Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, and West Brown are expected to be in good form to play against Stoke City. A draw against Liverpool means that Alex Ferguson will have to wait and see the results of Chelsea's match against Wigan United, before he can make a final decision about his retirement plans.
