Sir Alex Ferguson wants Chris Smalling to be more vocal – English Premier League news
Manchester United centre back http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chris-c9006 Smalling has been a revelation in his debut season for the Red Devils, since joining from Fulham for 10 million pounds before the start of the current 2010-11 campaign.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is delighted with the progress the 21-year-old has made in the season but he wants him to be a little more vocal while playing.
In an interview with a website, Smalling said, “The coaching staff wants me to start expressing myself a bit more. They think I am a bit quiet on the pitch. But it is starting to come. With more games I am sure that confidence will come across. At set-pieces
in particular you have to be a figurehead when you are in central defence. You have to dictate and make sure people are marking. I have to make sure that comes across.”
Smalling anchored United to a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers in a Man of the Match performance over the weekend. The defender has made seven consecutive starts for the Red Devils and he himself is surprised with it. With http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rio-Ferdinand-c31173 out for majority of
the matches and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nemanja-Vidic-c27550 absent in the last game, Smalling showed great leadership role in the heart of the United defence to guide the leaders to a victory.
Smalling has praised Vidic for calming his nerves in his success in the current season. He said that he had never played against such strikers and the Serbian has made things a lot easier for him.
The former Fulham defender has also caught the attention of the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wes-Brown-c36791
and Johnny Evans.
Smalling is keeping his head down and said that he needs to overcome slight weaknesses in his game so that he can become a top defender one day.
With Ferdinand out for long time, the defender is a pivotal figure for United in the club’s quest for a treble of trophies in the season.
