Sir Alex defends Glazers
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said that he has a good working relationship with the owners, the Glazer family. After the family took over the running of the club, a number of fans have protested against them, even during games, because of the enormous amount of debt the club is now under but Sir Alex has moved to clear the doubts regarding his own position at the club, which he maintains is as good as it has ever been.
The Legendary manager has made statements in the past supporting the owners and contradicting reports saying that he had no funds available for transfers due to the debt. Sir Alex argued that it was ‘inevitable’ that Manchester United would be bought by someone after the club went public and in the modern day business world, such purchases are almost always financed by debt, so the way Manchester United were bought is not as unusual as some in the press have made it out to be.
Ferguson said that he had been supported throughout his time at the club and had no complaints whatsoever about the way the club is being run, especially the football side of things, where Manchester United have excelled, winning three consecutive Premier League titles before Chelsea’s title victory last season. Manchester United have also managed to win a second European Cup under the Glazers, when they defeated Chelsea in the final of the UEFA Champions League in Rome in 2008.
In fact, Sir Alex is so happy with his job that he has put all thoughts of retirement out of his head until his health doesn’t get in the way. The Scot has been in charge at Manchester United for over two decades, 24 seasons to be exact, and gives no indication of stopping any time soon.
At 68, Sir Alex is among the oldest managers in world football but according to him, managing at the top level, with the challenges it provides, he feels that he still has the hunger to continue despite winning everything there is to win in club football.
Sir Alex will be more motivated for the coming season after seeing rivals Chelsea snatch the Premier League title from under their nose and also take the FA Cup. With only a League Cup success to talk about after a season which promised so much, the Manchester United manager will be hoping the additions of Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling will improve an already strong Red Devils’ squad.
With neighbours, Manchester City strengthening their squad, Manchester United are likely to face a very difficult title race in the coming season and although Sir Alex maintains that he has transfer funds to spend, Manchester United have failed to add a proven quality player to their side this season despite players such as Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs close to retirement.
Fans who oppose the takeover have said that they will continue to protest against the Glazers and Sir Alex’s support for them is not likely to change too much but the Glazers will still be grateful to the Scot for defending them on a public forum after they have had a very difficult time, especially in the English press and in fan circles.
