Sir Des Champs’s position remains unclear for the Cheltenham Festival
Sir Des Champs would be condidered as one of the major threats, if he competes in the Cheltenham Festival, which is not confirmed as yet. The annual event is scheduled to take place from 13th to 16th March, 2012.
The 6-year-old gelding has shown remarkable progress in his career, securing six consecutive wins.
The son of Robin Des Champs, out of Liste En Tete, had a phenomenal season debut.
He was immensely popular as he entered the competition as the evening’s favourite.
He breezed through the course as he defeated Fists Of Fury by a narrow margin of ½ a length in the Grade 2 Boylesports.com Bet On Your Mobile Novice Chase, at Leopardstown, on 28th January, 2012.
Owned by the Gigginstown House Stud, the gelding has been making his owners extremely proud.
He bagged a victory in the Cheltenham Festival last year, doing justice to his status as race favourite, while making the bookies and punters cheerful with his victory.
He entered the race with odds of 9 to 2, defeating Son Of Flicka by ½ a length, in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle on 18th March, 2011.
Despite his outstanding performances, his trainer Willie Mullins said that "It hasn't been decided yet which race Sir Des Champs will run in."
Owned by the same owners, First Lieutenant is also a good contender for the Cheltenham Festival.
Trained by M.F Morris, it is likely that the 7-year-old gelding will compete in the Grade 1 RSA Chase.
The son of Presenting, out of Fourstargale, will be competing in his first race of 2012. His last performance made his trainer proud. The gelding has the potential to secure a first place victory in the upcoming races.
He finished as a runner-up in the Grade 1 Topaz Fort Leney Novice Chase, at Leopardstown, on 28th December, 2011.
He entered the race as a favourite with odds of 7 to 4, but was defeated by Last Instalment by a distance of 6 lengths.
He performed well under pressure and maintained a steady pace, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with the leader.
Nonetheless, Sir Des Champs is expected to excel in the Cheltenham Festival, likely to spur up a surprise performance.
