I do not understand how Gawain is not chilvarious and heroic. I only see how he is.

Does anyone understand why he is not chilvalrous or heroic?

  1. when sir gawain is dishonest to the host about the girtle he is not being chivlarous or heroic.  he almost gets his head chopped off but by the graciousness of the green knight it is not.  he has to wear the green girtle as a symbol of his dishonesty and goes home to arthur's court in shame.
