Sir Viv Richards lauds Darren Sammy – Cricket News Update
The legendary West Indies batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Isaac-Vivian-Alexander-Richards-c64548, on Tuesday lavished praise on skipper Darren Sammy’s role as a man-manager as well as an all-rounder during the recently concluded three-match Test series against England.
Despite the Caribbean side losing the Wisden Trophy by a 2-0 margin, Sir Richards expressed satisfaction over http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DJG-Sammy-c1382’s captaincy and backed him to continue as the Windies skipper in future as well.
“He has done enough and should not feel he has one foot in and one foot out as far as the leadership in concerned. He has done his bit to provide a winning environment,” the batting veteran told BBC on Tuesday.
The 60-year-old former West Indies skipper, who played 121 Tests and 187 ODIs, singled out Sammy’s century knock in the second Test for praise, saying that he was thrilled to see the St. Lucia all-rounder reaching three digits at Trent Bridge. The Caribbean
batting prodigy observed that the skipper's hundred instilled a lot of confidence in the tourists and they came back as a much improved side in the drawn Edgbaston Test, where the West Indies batting line up went on to score 426 runs in their first innings.
“You need to have a leader who can come out to the middle and make some sort of contribution,” said Richards, who presided over the Caribbean team from 1984 to 1991.
Sammy took over as the West Indies skipper in October 2010 and has so far led the Windies in 19 Tests, winning 2 and losing 8. But the batting great is hopeful the Caribbean team would emerge as a fighting unit under the St. Lucia all-rounder’s leadership.
Richards, who covered the three-match series between England and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013, during the rain ruined third Test in Birmingham.
“Edgbaston was Narine's first Test match and conditions were not conducive to his style of bowling,” said the former skipper. “When and if he gets the opportunity in his own conditions he will be better. This is just a learning trip for him and he certainly
has the ingredients to be successful in future,” he added further.
