  1. Yeah the major difference is Sirius plays all unedited music (explicit language, profanity).  XM caters more to family & has stations with edited music.  I don't know any stations on Sirius that are edited.  The prices are basically the same.

  2. It all depends on what you like to listen to. Also, I found that XM has a better signal in cities & in open road.

Print out the channel guide from each website & compare what you like.

XM has a traffic & weather stations for major cities.

  3. I've had both XM and Sirius. I can strongly say I love XM more because they have better programmers for there music channels in which you won't hear many song replays. With Sirius They have more Dj's chatting all day and repeat songs over and over. Thats just my opinion, I recomend taking  a 3 day trial so you get a good feeling of the service.

XM I think has better quility radios they are made from Delphi, AudioVox, and Pioneer. Sirius has all of there radios made by Directed Eletronics. For Sound Quility, Its hard for me to tell a difference because I think they both sound the same but on Aug 5th XM upgraded there sound quility so i think XM has a little bit better sound quility than Sirius, but again it depends what you have that satellite radio hooked up to as far as a radio, if the radio has good sound quility your satellite radio will sound great.

The Price is all the same 12.95 a month however when you sign up for 1,2,3 or more years the price of the month goes down to less than 12 dollars. When you are a subscriber you can add more radios to your account for $6.99 a month. And when you join you also get a free online account where you can listen to your favorite XM or Sirius radio channels online at work or home.

Overall not a major difference, both companys have your music, sports and other entertainment. Sirius Has Howard, XM has Opie And Anothony. But I can strongly say XM has better music channels.

  4. Everyone has their own idea about which is better (that's why there's chocolate AND vanilla - because everyone has different taste). But in actuality, they are both pretty much the same with the exception of sports.

As to the receivers (the radios you'd be using), I suggest going to CNET.com and checking the ratings. Then go to the biggest electronics stores mear you: Best Buy, Circuit City, Brandsmart, Costco, Sam's Club etc and take a look at what's available. then decide on which unit fits your taste, features and budget and then (unless you're specifically a sports nut) go with the service that fits the best receiver for your needs.

    Here's more info if interested:

XM and Sirius, both public companies that you can buy stock in, are trying to merge. Both companies want this merger to save themselves. They have both spent LOTS of $$$ to set up their respective businesses and the subscription and advertising revenue hasn't come in as well as they'd hoped.

For instance, you should see the studios at XM in Washington - incredible! Every toy and gadget you could imagine. It's an engineer or DJ's playground... but very expensive!

Both fall under the authority of the FCC and FTC (among others). It is likely this merger will be allowed by the FCC (currently only one FCC commissioner is opposed). However the FTC may have a problem with the merger as they are concerned about a monopoly situation - though I wish they'd spend their resources on FPL, the Florida power company (but I digress).

The good news is that, if the merger is approved, the new company will be financially stronger than the two separate ones and the chances of you being able to enjoy satellite radio will be better under a stronger, merged single company.

One of the things promised by Sirius boss Mel Karmazin (who will undoubtedly end up as CEO of the merged company) is a special deal where you'd be able to select your favorite 50 stations from each service and only pay $6-$7 per month for that new plan. Or keep the full service for about $13 (what you are paying now). There will also be other deals. Plus, all the sports will be available, so you don't have to choose which service to get based on whether you like football or baseball - you'll have it all: pro and NCAA.

The merger would be a good deal for all involved - except maybe terrestrial radio and certain employees who would be let go - as one of the reasons for the merger would be to cut costs by taking advantage of the economies of scale it would provide, i.e. only one accounting department, sales dept., combining some of the channels that are virtually identical, etc.

Others who might not benefit are those seeking jobs in the industry as there would be fewer jobs available and only the best, most mature and most experienced would be hired.

Hope this helps clear the air. Good question. Most people just ask which to get, you asked a better more involved and smarter question.
