Hey, I am hosting a Japanese student next week and need a few things answered before I receive the student.

She will need to use our computer but we don't have Japanese symbols or kanji keys, is there any way to change our settings atleast until she leaves because I know she will need to communicate to her family back home one way or another.

Another question I need answered is, What should my family get her for the days she is going to be here?

I already have :

*Magazines

*Lotions that are american like bath and body works

*nuts(pistasios)

*t-shirts w/ american writing on it, ( my mom said that when she went to japan this summer that they "LOVED" american things with English

on them.

*Key chains -united states key chains

*postcards

*scrap booking material

*tea's like (lemon and other fruity flavors because they have an over abundence of green and other natrual flavors insead of an american tea)

*Levi's because they are only about $30 or less dollars here..and over

$700 dollars there....

What else?

  1. Assuming you're using Windows XP go to Control Panel, Regional and Language Options (easier to find on Classic mode), Languages tab, details, then Add and select Japanese. You'll need your XP CD to add it, but then you can use the language bar to change the language you're typing in, with Japanese you'll need to open the bar and select hiragana (which'll auto change to kanji)/katakana input modes though, or it'll just style in roman characters.

As for the other question, no idea. I've heard fruit is more expensive in Japan, but I can't confirm that. It'd depend on what the person likes too, for instance they may hate english writing t-shirts even if a lot of people like them.

  2. Wow! Sounds like you're really prepared! I think she'll love a lot of the things you've gotten!

I was unclear what you meant about the tea, though. I think she would like green tea. Also, she might not like American food--you just don't know till she has it. American sweets tend to be too sweet. So having some fruit might be good. Also, if you can get some Japanese rice, that would be good too. If she doesn't like anything else, she'll at least like that.
