  1. Watch the birds habits, it may live in the woods,or wet lands,or along a river/stream a field.Consider  its food preferences, some eat insects, some eat fruits and greens some eat seeds.

Look at shape and size Birds are large and small and tiny. The length of the legs varies as well as the feet depends on life styles. An IMPORTANT indicator of species IS the WING LOOK AT COLORS!!!!PATTERNS!! and MARKINGS!!

Compare the contours and arrangements of the feathers.Flight patterns are also important.

If can examine the home of this bird. Some have nests in different shapes and materials others scratch holes in the ground some live in a bird house or in tree holes.

Look at the beak size, color shape.this depends on eating habits can be long and slender or short and flat  some are conical in shape others hooked and sharp. Listen to the sound this bird makes, some are rhythmic in tune and some are calls or bursts.

Make a list of the CHARACTERISTICS-----of this bird you are trying to identify  find a comprehensive list of bird classes and species (with pic preferably) and look for a bird that combines all of these marks of identification there are also recordings of birds available to assist with ID ing your bird.

  2. you could go on to google and tye in names of birds and you can find the type of bird it is.

    ( \_/ )

    (='.'=)

    ('')_('')

  3. it is better to look it in a book of many species of birds

  4. The only sites that will accomodate your demands -- i.e. you describe the bird and they tell you about it -- are blog sites, or discussion forums (sort of) like Yahoo Answers, and quite frankly, none of them are extremely reliable. I believe that Yahoo Answers is one of your best bets. You could've described the bird here and many people could've helped you. Yahoo Groups is another good source, but you may need to look up a bit to find the right discussion. Yahoo has it all, dude! However, the best thing to do is call a local wildlife rehabilitator, they can help you out a lot.

  5. Is this a baby bird or an adult.  There are plenty of sites for IDing adult birds but not babies.  For adults..you can send me a photo and I can ID it for you or go to one of these sites:

    http://enature.com

    http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBir...

If this is a baby bird..this is what you should do:

If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly.   You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it.  If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest.  Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched.  If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival.  Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own.  Look for a rehab here:
