Six Colorado Rockies' players headed to Arbitration this February - MLB News
The Colorado Rockies have six players that will be filing for arbitration including pitcher Jhoulys Chacin and outfielder Dexter Fowler. Teams generally offer a single year deal or at times even multiple year deals but it is unlikely that the Rockies will
be handing out any of those this year.
The players who will be filing for arbitration include recently acquired relief pitcher Wilton Lopez, left-handed pitcher Josh Outman, outfielder Tyler Colvin, shortstop Jonathan Herrera, starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin and Dexter Fowler.
Dexter Fowler, who now commends a great deal of respect amongst the players in the Rockies’ camp, is eligible for arbitration for a second consecutive year. Last year the arbitration was avoided and he had a $2.35 million contract for 2012.
The 2012 season was the best year in the switch hitter’s career as he posted an even .300 with a .383 on-base percentage. He recently has shown has pleasure at being a player that youngsters in the team look up to for advice.
Wilton Lopez has just come to the Colorado Rockies as a trade for starting pitcher Alex White from the Houston Astros. He has yet to play for the Colorado ball club. Last year, he had a 6-3 winning record with a 2.17 ERA as a closing pitcher in 64 regular
season games.
Jhoulys Chacin is coming back after an injury shortened 2012 season. He started 14 games in the previous season with a 3-5 win-loss record, 4.43 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. In 2011, he had started 31 games as a pitcher.
The 27-year-old Tyler Colvin had the best year of his career in 2012. The outfielder posted a .290 batting average and a .327 on-base percentage with 122 hits. He batted in 72 runs and went long on 18 occasions.
Shortstop Herrera played 86 games and posted a .259 batting average with a .323 on-base percentage. With a total of 59 hits, he managed 12 RBI’s and hit three home-runs.
Josh Outman had a forgeable year in 2012 and played Double-A and Triple-A ball along with playing in the Majors. He played a total of 27 games in the Major League in 2012, seven as a starting pitcher and posted a 1-3 losing record. His 8.19 ERA was quite
obviously unacceptable as well.
These players are expected to be able to earn more this year than the previous one by the route of arbitration. There will be a last ditch effort prior to the arbitration in front of three judges and both the players and the ball clubs will try to negotiate
a new contract. The hearings will take place from February 4 to February 20.
We can certainly hope that there is a positive outcome and there is no need for arbitration to take place.
