Question:

Six and out?

What are your thoughts on this? (from the Sideswipe section of the NZ Herald, Wednesday

"Cricketers at the Harrogate Cricket Club have been banned from hitting sixes because of health and safety concerns. Big hitters will be automatically out, under the new rules. The decision was made after a meeting with nearby residents. Most of the neighbours are very supportive of the club, but a few complain about balls in their gardens, says the club's chairman. "As long as everyone knows the rules at the start of the game, you just play to the rules.""

I would hate to be a batsman who momentarily forgot this rule and connected with one too well, only to be given out for clearing the fence.

What would the entry in the scorebook be for the method of dismissal - out hit six?

I don't think it is right for a cricket club to mess with the fundamentals of the game in this manner - could they consider moving the ground or any other options?

  1. That's just not cricket! How dare they? I'll guarentee the ground was there before most of the houses.

  2. Intresting.

  3. I think the people who support this do not like cricket.

  4. ITS JUST NOT CRICKET

  5. Forget it and hitting sixes can be remarkable in cricket.

  6. ITS not CRICKET

    just fluke fantacy lol

  7. what's cricket without any sixes?. anyway i think this game was meant for dravid

  8. This is ridiculous, I bet the ground was there before the residents, it should be them that makes the compromise.

  9. Well mate all i can say is -"It just ai'nt cricket'.....

i dont think they have the right to mess with the fundaments of cricket neither, what would a cricket match be with out the big hitting sixers?...

Very boring, that's what it would be...Gee i thought 6 and out was one of the rules of back yard cricket...lol

What i would like to know is how long has the ground been there, and how long have the residents been there?...They think they can move in and push out a sport that has been played there for years...Toss em out i say....

  10. YEAH its really obnoxious!!!

  11. I think the people who support this do not like cricket.

There was a similar Q from LBJ a few days' ago. I did not understand it then. I thought it was for the Player's health.

  12. This sounds like some of the rules of gully cricket, which I grew up playing.

If the ball hits a window, you are out.

If the ball goes into the balcony of someone who is not liable to return it, you are not only out, but also supposed to buy a new ball.

If the ball hits a car, you are out. And all of you also run for your lives!!!!

    And so on....

  13. It is unfortunate, but sports does not have precedence over the

dangers on humans.  Every city has rules and every one in the

community needs are bounded by those rules. We have similar

baseball and golf grounds around business or residential areas

in US. To provide both sides and to the community as well, the

city decided to put a long and 350 ft high fence around the park.

The fence is sort where the balls will not be able to go through

them and also they do not block the light. It looks like a large

fish net hanging around the park. The good news in this park

most of the teens and young play baseball and also have the

league games. I have never heard of the ball going out of the

net - but I have heard players getting hurt on the field not

because of net, but sports injuries.

If I was a residence and get into - this is one suggestion that

    can be provided.

Yeah - you hit a six and you are out - that stinks.....Alternative

solutions need to be pitched in.
