we have a 5yr.old and an 11yr old which would be better for the 5yr. old?

If this is your five year old's first time going to an amusement park, I would say try Lake Compounce first.  It is physically smaller, so there is less walking, so it'll be less likely that they would get too tired out.  And there is still plenty for an eleven year old to do there--three coasters and a decent water park.
