Six-run fourth inning gives Houston Astros 10-4 victory over Cincinnati Reds – MLB Update
J. A. Happ and Houston Astros’ pitchers put an extraordinarily combined effort to give their team an emphatic 10-4 victory against Cincinnati Reds at the Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati on Tuesday, May 3.
Happ’s single that came in the free flowing six-run fourth inning not only added to his career with three RBIs but also gave the Astros their biggest score of the season.
While the win was undoubtedly the result of a team effort, Happ won enormous applause not only from the spectators but also his team-mates as well. The Astros’ fans finally had something to cheer about, as their team put in a good performance and took a
decisive victory.
"It was awesome to see that," said Brett Wallace, who hit his second homer. "Happ did a good job keeping us in there early and gave us a chance to get that lead."
The Reds’ Mike Leake threw a shut-out first inning followed by Brandon Phillips who scored the first run for Cincinnati, giving an early lead. Chris Johnson scored in the next inning for the Astros to level the score. However, little did Leake realise what
was in store for him when he came out to pitch in the fourth inning.
The Astros opened the floodgate of runs in the fourth after going 1-1 till the third inning. The runs started with Clint Barmes double, giving a 3-1 lead to the Astros. Humberto Quintero made it 4-1 with his single followed by Happ, who made it 5-1. Jason
Bourgeois scored two runs to take the score to a safe 7-1 for the Astros.
The lead was taken to 9-1 by the Astros, owing to two singles off the struggling Jordan Smith’s fastballs. First, it was Wallace who homered to left centre to make it 8-1 and then Quintero with his brilliant sacrifice fly hit, taking the score to 9-1. Reds’
Drew Stubbs scored an amazing two-run homer to bring the lead down to 9-3.
Edgar Renteria scored another single for the Reds to bring the score to 9-4 for Cincinnati. The Reds’ offence could not live up to expectations while going for a major hit. From nowhere another single of Bill Hall came for the Astros, taking the lead to
10-4. Houston’s Nelson Figueroa successfully pitched a shut-out ninth inning to give his team a fascinating 10-4 victory to the Astros against the Reds.
